What YOU Can Do

Are you a trusted messenger?

Think about communities you’re connected to: service groups, schools, religious organizations, community aide businesses, campus student groups, or other communities. If the census matters to you, you may be able to help others in your sphere of influence, particularly hard to count demographics, to be comfortable with, secure with, and willing and able to complete the census as soon as possible. Self-awareness and reflection are important first steps prior to deciding how to be helpful.

      • Are Any of Those Individuals Internet-less?

This is the first year that the Census can be filled out online! The American Library Association is joining in with wonderful resources, training, as well as available access to the internet for those wanted to fill the Census out online but have no internet access at home!

Do you talk to family and friends?

A lot of people just don’t know that the Census is coming. Once they are aware of its importance, not just in the country at large but in their personal lives and community,  they’ll be more apt to complete it in a timely manner.

Are You a College Student?

Set up a table on campus before the Census to provide information, have people commit to participate in the Census, and write reminder postcards to have sent to themselves.

Host a Dialogue. On campus or in the community, use this small group dialogue guide to have a conversation with others about your experiences, hopes, fears, and expectations about the census.

Join a Complete Count Committee. You can form a CCC around a physical or interest community, or connect to one that already exists. Learn about CCCs here. 

Are You a Teacher?

There are wonderful resources available to teach students about the Census! There are materials available to use for teachers for every grade in Math, English, History, Geography, Sociology, etc. that fit into Common Core and SOL state standards!

Available are grade and subject-specific:

    • Coloring books
    • Games and Puzzles
    • Lesson Plans
    • Maps and other visual materials
    • Educational videos
    • Sample Activities and Projects

They are:

  • Teacher-designed, created, and reviewed
  • Free, customizable, printable
  • Supportive of existing curricula and standards
  • Designed to enhance learning, increase statistical literacy, and prepares students for a data driven world
  • An educational tool for their home, so they as well as the rest of their family is counted
